Match Reports

Whitchurch Saints 2nd XI v Dinefwr Saturday 6th October 2012

Score 6 - 0 Win

The 2’s girls had unfinished business from their first match of the season last week, where they were extremely frustrated with their 2-2 draw to Radnor.  Poor Dinefwr didn’t know what’d hit them when the whistle went to start the game.

With lots of unavailable players this weekend, many of the 2’s were required for the 1’s match and so some of the 3s stepped up to play for the 2’s and what a brilliant job they did!  Saints piled on the pressure from the start and were winning within minutes. The girls were instructed by stand-in captain Claire ‘Hamo’ Hamilton that they mustn’t get complacent and that they must keep focused and keep putting in the goals as well as protecting their own goal.  There were some lovely passages of play during the first half which led to goals and many short corners.  Although Dinefwr did keep the Saints defence busy at times and had a fair few attacking passages which were dealt with in a strong manor.  Saints went into the half time break 4-0 up and full of confidence that more goals could be scored in the second half.

After the break Dinefwr surprised the Saints girls and came out strong putting pressure on the defence and winning short corners that were disposed of well.  But the match was heating up with Dinefwr attacking more and Saints getting frustrated.  The physicality of the match resulted in warnings from the umpires, followed by a yellow card for a Saints player.  Dinefwr tried to make the most of their 1 woman advantage, but were continuously denied in front of goal by excellent defending work from Saints.  Saints managed to score another 2 in the second half and keep a clean sheet, leaving the final score at 6-0 with the scorers being: Sam Collis (3), Emily Williams (2) and Claire Hamilton (1).

All the girls were happy with their performance and their much needed first win to kick off their Prem 2 campaign.

Whitchurch Saints 2nd XI v Radnor Saturday 19th September 2012

Score 2 - 2 Draw

The 2’s started off their Prem 2 campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw with Radnor.  It took the girls some time to get into the game playing with new players, new formations and new strategies under new captain Rebecca Daniels.  But before long the girls were into the swing of the game and took the league through Nicki Oliver. Radnor soon came back at Saints and equalised through a well-executed short corner.

The half time score was 1 – 1 and after a motivational team talk from the skipper the girls went out in the second half and hit Radnor hard, with Oliver scoring her second of the game.  2-1 and the Saints girls were looking strong and kept piling on the pressure in the Radnor half with some excellent play all over the field from the young and old, the new and the experienced.   With 10 minutes left Radnor picked up the ball on the break and with lots of room surged down the right hand side, dragging the Saint’s defenders towards the ball leaving the centre of the pitch exposed.  The ball was slipped into the space and Radnor equalised.

The final score was 2 – 2 and the girls were disheartened with the result, as it wasn’t a fair reflection of the game, but possession doesn’t win games, goals do.
